Meet Nathalie Huerta, the pioneer of the nation’s first gym with a queer focus.

According to creator and trainer Nathalie Huerta, the goal of The Queer Gym is to cultivate happy, healthy homos. The gym has been open for 12 years, and Pride Month is no less. The gym first debuted in Oakland, California, in 2010, but over the previous several years it has transitioned to an entirely virtual environment. The Queer Gym offers both one-on-one coaching for fitness and nutrition as well as small group training with no more than 20 participants per class. HOW SHE BEGAN IN FITNESS Huerta was born and reared in Anaheim, California, and was an active child athlete. She cherished exercising, going to the gym, and pushing her physical limitations. She played basketball in her first two years of college and intended to get into physical therapy. But after working in the field for numerous internships, she came to the conclusion that this was not the direction she wanted to go. Although she enjoyed assisting others, she claims that she wasn’t emotionally prepared for the role at that time in her life. Huerta eventually earned a degree in fitness and sports medicine, but after quitting basketball, she found herself 60 pounds heavier and unsure of her next move.

Huerta made the decision to sign up for a local gym in an effort to start feeling more like her athletic self as she deliberated her next course of action. He approached Huerta about working as a personal trainer after becoming friendly with the business owner. But there was one condition. He informed her that after a six-month probationary term, she would need to demonstrate significant weight loss in order to keep her employment. Huerta was shocked but ultimately agreed to take the position and dropped 65 pounds in just six months. She says she now regrets not challenging this man, but the incident nevertheless served as inspiration for how she wished to interact with her own clients. She established herself as the facility’s go-to trainer during that time, and a two-month waiting list formed for her clientele. Huerta’s first success propelled her into a career in corporate fitness, where she eventually rose to the position of gym manager before deciding to start her own business.

After leaving her corporate fitness position, Huerta returned to graduate school and started her own business as an independent trainer to pay for her tuition. CREATING AN INCLUSIVE AND WELCOMING QUEER GYM To draw in LGBT clientele, she started marketing herself particularly as a lesbian trainer. This deliberate choice resulted from her own experiences in the gym, where she frequently did not feel at ease as a queer woman. Because traditional gyms aren’t often very accepting for members of the queer community, Huerta adds, “I knew I wanted to create my own gym because renting space in regular gyms wasn’t going to work for me or my clients.” I realized there really weren’t any inclusive gyms ensuring safety for the queer community, so I built my own. I created a space so that people like myself could feel comfortable accessing fitness and wellness while also feeling a sense of community.

There is only one clear rule at The Queer Gym: no homophobia. zero transphobia Null fatphobia. zero xenophobia Do not mansplain. No gym snoops. Huerta made sure that The Queer Gym was a safe area for every body and one where body-shaming of any form would not be accepted as a result of her original experience as a trainer being told she had lose weight in order to achieve. She says, “I was furious when I was told I needed to lose weight to be a trainer. For queer folks, our bodies are constantly under attack; the gym shouldn’t be another place where we’re told something is wrong with our bodies. It’s an essential part of creating a safe space. In retrospect, I wish I had been more vocal about how problematic it was, because my response to just lose the weight and move on probably made ‘the owner’ think it was okay.
