The control over when you become a parent is up to
you. Making a smart decision about birth control or
contraception isn’t easy as there are so many things
to think about and discuss. A great way to get
started is to learn about the various birth control
methods you or your partner can use as well as
talking with your doctor.
Each method of birth control has its pros and cons
and there is no ‘best’ method of birth control.
However, some methods work better than others at
preventing pregnancy but researchers are always
working to develop or improve birth control methods.
When choosing a birth control method, you should
take these factors into account: possible side
effects, your comfort level using the method, the
number of sexual partners you have, how often you
have sex, your overall health, if you want to have
children and how well each method works in
preventing pregnancy.
Please keep in mind that not all methods of birth
control can prevent pregnancy 100% of the time.
Birth control methods can fail, but there are ways
that you can greatly increase a methods success rate
by using it correctly all of the time. Remember, the
only way to be sure you never get pregnant is to
live a life of abstinence.
There are many methods of birth control that a woman
can use. Here is a list of birth control methods
with estimates of effectiveness, or how well they
work in preventing pregnancy when used correctly,
for each method: continuous abstinence, male
condoms, oral contraceptive (the pill), the
mini-pill, female condoms, depo-provera, diaphragm,
contraceptive sponge, the patch, surgical
sterilization and emergency contraception.
