Male impotence or erectile dysfunction is defined as
the inability of a man to achieve and maintain an
erection sufficient for mutually satisfactory
intercourse with his partner.
The quality of life that a male has is determined
upon many things, including his sexual health.
Unfortunately as Americans age, disorders such as
erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence are becoming
increasingly more important. Lately, this subject
has been widely discussed in the media and men and
women of all ages are seeking guidance in an effort
to improve their relationships and experience
satisfying sex lives.
Erectile dysfunction and impotence is often
associated with disorders such as high blood
pressure, heart disease, nervous system disorders,
diabetes and depression. Erectile dysfunction in
many cases can also be an unwanted side effect from
medication. In many men, sexual dysfunction may be
the symptom of such disorders that brings them to
the doctor's office.
Erection problems and impotence usually produce a
significant psychological and emotional reaction in
most men. This can be described as a pattern of
anxiety and stress that will even further interfere
with normal sexual functions. This ‘performance
anxiety’ should be recognized and addressed by your
doctor!
Treatment for impotence and erectile dysfunction has
been demonstrated to improve intimacy and
satisfaction, improve sexual aspects of quality of
life as well as overall quality of life, and relieve
symptoms of depression.
While this information focuses primarily on male
erectile dysfunction, keep in mind that your
intimate other or sexual partner plays an integral
role in this entire process. If successful and
effective management is to occur, any discussion of
treatment should include the couple, not just the
individual.
