There are various definitions and explanations for the term mental health. For some, being mentally healthy may mean that one doesn't suffer from any sort of mental illness. Other definitions for the term "mental health" include capacity to live a happy and fulfilling life, the ability to effectively deal with the various trials and problems that life gives, and a certain stability in one's emotions and behavior.

Mental Disorders

There are certain medical conditions or abnormalities that may cause one to be considered mentally ill, one of which is obsessive-compulsive disorder. The sickness called obsessive-compulsive disorder is often characterized by having excessive thoughts and worries. Because of all this worrying, one resorts to doing certain things in a repetitive fashion for the whole day such as washing hands or folding clothes. The persistent thoughts are often referred to as obsessions, while the repeated rituals that one does all the time to forget about the obsessions are compulsions. So in obsessive-compulsive disorder, a person thinks about obsessions and performs compulsions over and over in any given day.

There is also another mental illness called schizophrenia. In schizophrenia, a person usually ends up hearing, seeing, feeling, or smelling imaginary things. These are called hallucinations, with hearing voices as the most common form. At some, point these imaginary things can overwhelm the ordinary life of a person.

Treating Mental Disorders

More often than not, an average person suffers from one or more mental disorders. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of medications available that are made for helping treat these illnesses.
