Canadian Health Digest - Family Health - Insomnia

Do you suffer from sleeplessness regularly and you don't know the reason why this is happening? If you toss and turn every night before finally falling asleep, then you may be suffering from insomnia. Other symptoms of this condition include daytime sleepiness or fatigue, waking up way too early or waking up during the night, and irritability during daytime.

Insomnia can be caused by a variety of factors. These factors may be anxiety, stress, stimulants, depression, change in work schedule or environment, medical conditions, and eating too much late at night. If insomnia is already interfering with your daily activities and if it has been bothering you for more than a month, then it's best to consult your doctor to find out what might be causing your condition and what could be the best way to treat it.

You can also try home remedies. Eating foods rich in tryptophan can aid your sleeping. Tryptophan can be found in foods such as turkey, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, bananas, oats, sesame, peanuts, dried dates, yogurt, and milk. You can also try to remember what kind of things make you sleepy. If reading a particular book or watching a certain movie can make you drowsy, then you might try doing just that and see if it works. If, however, you suspect that your sleeping problem is caused by something like depression or restless legs syndrome, then you should definitely consult a doctor. He will probably give you a prescription for medication or make you undergo behavioral therapies. Medications, though, should not be used for more than just a few days, since you may become reliant upon them. The goal, after all, is to help you sleep on your own.
