Canadian Health Digest - Childrens Health - Child Behavior Disorders

Being unruly is part of a kid's life but extreme behavior patterns may be signs of serious behavior issues. Medically referred to as child behavior disorders, these disorders are usually characterized by disruptive and aggressive behavioral patterns that may persist for many months.

If a child's behavior is so aggressive that he starts to hurt other people or animals, parents or caretakers should exercise proper disciplinary methods. If this harmful behavior is accompanied by early involvement in sexual acts, stealing or lying, drug or alcohol abuse, and a hostile behavior towards adults or other figures of authority, then further examination is needed to determine if the child has a behavior disorder or not.

It's normal for kids to test their parents' patience every now and then. However, a clear line should be drawn between what type of behavior is acceptable and what is not. In order to help out parents to determine if their child is simply misbehaving or is actually exhibiting symptoms of behavior disorders, organizations such as the Center for Mental Health Services were established. Their aim is to help parents to recognize, prevent, or treat kids with extreme behavior disorders. Recognizing the signs of such disorders at an early age is vital to the development of the child since these kinds of behaviors can put kids at risk of committing suicide, theft, and other actions that have grave consequences as they grow older.

Treatment methods for child behavior disorders can include family therapy, special classes for parents, or a combination of both techniques.
